Solstice

It's the Solstice
When winter’s days are cold as charity
Winds sharp as knives that cut at flesh
As if to fillet bodies that venture outInto the blackness of moonless nights
Pathways in countryside disappearHedges loom over nervous travellers
The cry of a lonely vixen echoesHer mate howls from afar in reply
The sky becomes a wonderland
Orion marching on his autumnal path
Across a field of milky stars
Our galaxy and beyond into infinity
We can but marvel at the sightThat we see suns light years away
On nights like this some wishTo leap from planet to planet
And view the earth from eachFramed by nature’s night jewels
Sparkling on a dark blue velvet ground
